Actually, this is not first use of the McCone protest. Published in 2006, Bayard Stockton's FLAWED PATRIOT clearly refers to this on page 149. He offers that the call was made on the insistence of William Harvey. [Where was Richard Helms?!] The book was completed posthumously and sometimes suffers on that account. Specifically, there is no citation for this extraordinary call.

[Editor's Note: The article is about the telephone conversation between McCone and Rusk, not McCone and McNamara, which is the conversation that Stockton mentions on page 149 of FLAWED PATRIOT. Both calls stemmed from the same meeting, however.

Mr. Banks, You are referring to an August 10th call to McNamara (if McCone's memory is correct). This document is about a similar call, but to Rusk, and on August 21st.
